Mathematics at Bexton

Mathematics at Bexton is designed to give every child a deep understanding of number, structure and pattern, enabling them to think logically, reason clearly and apply their knowledge with confidence. We believe that all children can succeed in mathematics through careful teaching, meaningful practice and a strong sense of connection between ideas. As children move through school, they develop not only fluency in calculation, but also the ability to explain, justify and use mathematics in a wide range of contexts.

Our approach reflects our commitment to The Pathway, where children grow as confident learners who can communicate their thinking, work collaboratively and apply their knowledge beyond the classroom.

Learning Mathematics at Bexton

Mathematics is taught through a mastery approach, where concepts are explored in depth and all children move through the curriculum together. Learning is carefully sequenced into small, manageable steps so that knowledge builds securely over time and pupils develop a deep and connected understanding of mathematics.

Each mathematics lesson is carefully structured to support deep understanding and active engagement. Children begin with a grappling problem, encouraging them to think, discuss and draw on prior knowledge. This is followed by a review of previous learning to strengthen fluency and ensure key knowledge is secure.

New concepts are introduced through clear explanation and the use of stem sentences, helping children to articulate their understanding using precise mathematical language. Pupils then move into guided and independent practice, where they apply their learning through a range of fluency, reasoning and problem-solving tasks. Lessons typically conclude with whole-class feedback, allowing misconceptions to be addressed and learning to be consolidated.

Mathematical thinking is central to every lesson. Children are encouraged to:

  • look for patterns and relationships

  • make connections between ideas

  • explain and justify their reasoning

  • use precise mathematical language

Fluency is developed through deep understanding and regular, purposeful practice. Secure recall of key number facts, including multiplication tables, is an essential part of this, enabling children to think more efficiently and focus on solving more complex problems.

A Coherent and Connected Curriculum

Our curriculum is carefully mapped from Nursery to Year 6, ensuring continuity and supporting smooth progression between year groups. New learning builds on prior knowledge, with concepts revisited and developed over time so that understanding is secure and sustained.

We use high-quality materials, including NCETM guidance and White Rose schemes of learning, to support teaching. These are carefully adapted to meet the needs of our pupils and to reflect our wider curriculum approach. Mathematical ideas are explored through a range of representations and models, helping children to “see” the structure of mathematics and make meaningful connections.

In the Early Years, children develop strong mathematical foundations through rich, practical experiences. They explore number, pattern, shape and measure through play and structured activities, building the understanding needed for later learning. This early focus provides the foundation for increasingly sophisticated reasoning, calculation and problem solving as children progress through school.

Ensuring Success for All Pupils

We are committed to ensuring that every child can access and succeed in mathematics. All pupils work on the same core content, with support and challenge provided through questioning, scaffolding and carefully designed tasks.

Pupils who need additional support receive timely intervention to address misconceptions and build confidence. Those who grasp concepts more quickly are challenged through deeper problems that extend their thinking and deepen their understanding of the same content.

This approach ensures that no child is left behind, while also enabling all pupils to achieve highly.

For pupils with additional needs, learning is adapted through the use of visual representations, practical resources and structured support. In our Rainbow Room, a bespoke pathway (Maths for Life) supports pupils in developing mathematical understanding through carefully sequenced, small-step progression tailored to individual needs.

Developing Confidence, Independence and Application

Mathematics at Bexton goes beyond calculation. Children are encouraged to see mathematics as meaningful and relevant, both within school and in the wider world.

Through problem solving, discussion and real-life contexts, pupils develop:

  • confidence in their own ability

  • independence in approaching challenges

  • resilience when faced with difficulty

  • an understanding of how mathematics applies beyond the classroom

Digital tools and resources further support learning, providing opportunities for practice, feedback and engagement through interactive approaches.

Supporting Your Child at Home

Regular, short practice at home can make a significant difference to your child’s confidence and success in mathematics. Practising key number facts, particularly multiplication tables, helps children to develop fluency and frees up their thinking for more complex problem solving.

Even five minutes a day can have a meaningful impact, supporting the work children are doing in school and helping them to feel more confident in their learning.

A Love of Mathematics

At Bexton, we want children to enjoy mathematics and to see themselves as capable mathematicians. Through engaging lessons, collaborative learning and opportunities to explore ideas in depth, we aim to foster curiosity and enthusiasm for the subject.

Pupil voice plays an important role in shaping our curriculum, ensuring that learning remains engaging, relevant and meaningful. As a result, children develop not only strong mathematical knowledge and skills, but also a positive attitude towards learning that will support them throughout their education and beyond.
