Teaching and Learning at Bexton
Guiding learning, enabling success.
High-quality teaching is at the heart of our curriculum and ensures that it has impact.
At Bexton, teaching is clear, consistent and responsive. Our approach supports pupils to understand new learning, practise skills and apply knowledge with increasing independence.
We want every child to feel confident, curious and proud of their learning. Our classrooms are places where children are supported to think deeply, speak confidently and challenge themselves, knowing they will be helped to succeed.
What learning feels like at Bexton
When teaching and learning are at their strongest, you will see children who are:
engaged and motivated
confident to share ideas and take risks
supported to succeed, even when learning feels challenging
proud of what they achieve
You will see classrooms that are calm, purposeful and full of talk, where every child is expected to think and participate.
We call this Learning Without Limits: high-quality teaching that stretches, includes and inspires every child.
How we teach
We use a shared approach to lessons called the C.L.E.A.R structure, which helps create consistency and high expectations across the school.
This means that in every lesson, children:
connect new learning to what they already know
learn new ideas in clear, manageable steps
practise and explore learning with support
apply their learning independently
reflect on what they have learned and how to improve
Lessons may look different across subjects but they feel consistent. This helps children feel secure, confident and ready to learn.
Teaching at Bexton is shaped by what children need in the moment. Teachers are constantly noticing, listening and adapting. A misconception might be addressed immediately, a question might lead to deeper discussion or additional support might be provided so that a child can move forward with confidence.
This means that learning is not fixed, it is responsive. Pupils are supported to succeed because teaching evolves as they learn.
Thinking, talk and participation
We believe that learning happens best when children are actively involved.
Across the school, teachers use a small number of shared classroom routines (protocols) to make sure every child is thinking and participating. These include:
structured talk with a partner
opportunities to build on each other’s ideas
whole-class responses to check understanding
thoughtful questioning where all children may be asked
This means that learning is not just for the confident few: every child is included, supported and challenged.
Children are taught how to listen, respond and explain their thinking clearly, helping them grow in confidence and communication.
This consistency supports both learning and behaviour, helping pupils to feel confident and engaged and helping classrooms to feel calm, purposeful and focused.
Learning through The Pathway
Our curriculum is brought to life through the Five Trails of The Pathway:
Performance | Social | Community | Team | Communication
These are not extra activities, they shape how children experience learning. For example, children might:
explain and present their ideas
work collaboratively to solve problems
discuss and debate different viewpoints
connect their learning to the wider world
Through this, children develop not only strong knowledge but also confidence, independence and a sense of responsibility.
Supporting every child to succeed
At Bexton, inclusion is at the heart of teaching.
We have high expectations for every child and adapt teaching so that all learners can succeed. Support is built into everyday classroom practice through:
clear explanations and modelling
structured talk and rehearsal
visual supports and scaffolds
careful checking of understanding
This means that children are supported to become increasingly independent and confident in their learning.
