Curriculum at Bexton
Building knowledge, shaping who children become.
At Bexton, our curriculum is designed to enable every child to grow, succeed and flourish: academically, personally and socially. We provide a broad and ambitious curriculum that develops strong subject knowledge while also building confidence, independence and a sense of responsibility.
Our curriculum is the journey children travel during their time with us. It shapes what they know, what they can do and, importantly, who they become.
It is designed to open doors to knowledge, to opportunity and to the kind of future each child chooses for themselves.
We want every child to experience success, to develop belief in themselves and to leave Bexton ready for the next stage of their learning and life.
The Pathway: Learning that is meaningful and memorable
At the heart of our curriculum sits The Pathway: our whole-school framework for learning and personal development.
Through the Five Trails of Performance, Social, Community, Team and Communication, children develop the skills and qualities that help them to grow as learners and as individuals.
The Pathway shapes how learning feels at Bexton. It ensures that children do more than complete tasks: they participate, contribute, collaborate and communicate.
In lessons, this might mean pupils working together to solve a problem, sharing their thinking with others or presenting their ideas with increasing confidence. These experiences help learning to feel purposeful and connected to the real world.
Curriculum Design
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that learning builds over time.
New knowledge is introduced in manageable steps, revisited regularly and applied in different contexts so that pupils can develop secure understanding. Teachers consider what pupils already know, what they need to learn next and how best to support them.
In lessons, this might involve revisiting previous learning, making connections between ideas or providing opportunities for pupils to apply knowledge in meaningful ways. These moments help children to move beyond surface understanding and develop knowledge that is secure and lasting.
Learning in the Early Years forms the foundation of this journey, developing language, curiosity and early understanding. As pupils move through the school, this knowledge becomes more complex, more connected and more deeply understood.
By the time pupils leave Bexton, they are equipped with the knowledge, skills and self-belief to succeed in their learning, contribute to their communities and shape their own future.
Curriculum Structure
While this page provides an overview, detailed subject-specific information is set out within our Curriculum Handbook and our Subject Handbooks.
Each Subject Handbook explains how knowledge and skills develop over time, ensuring clarity and consistency across the school. Alongside this, our Learning Journeys show how learning is sequenced across each year group.
Together, these documents ensure that the curriculum is coherent, well-planned and ambitious for all pupils.
Inclusion through curriculum
Inclusion is central to our curriculum.
We recognise that children come to school with different experiences, strengths and needs. Our curriculum is therefore designed to reduce barriers to learning by building knowledge step by step, explicitly teaching key concepts and supporting pupils to develop independence.
Teachers adapt learning so that all pupils can access the curriculum and experience success. This ensures that every child feels included, capable and supported.
Further information about how we support pupils can be found on our Inclusion page.
Breadth of Learning
Children at Bexton experience a wide and varied curriculum that includes all National Curriculum subjects alongside opportunities for creativity, enrichment and personal development.
We aim to provide learning that reflects both the local community and the wider world, helping children to understand the world around them and their place within it.
Experiences that shape learning
We believe that memorable experiences play an important role in helping children to learn and grow.
Through Bright Beginnings and wider curriculum opportunities, pupils take part in hands-on, real-life learning that develops independence, confidence and responsibility.
These experiences help children to discover interests, develop new skills and see possibilities beyond their immediate environment. They also ensure that all pupils have access to opportunities that support aspiration and personal development.
Preparing children for the future
Our curriculum is designed to prepare pupils not only for the next stage of education but for life beyond school.
We want children to leave Bexton with secure knowledge, a belief in themselves and the confidence to take on new challenges.
Through their learning, children develop independence, build relationships and begin to understand their role within their community and the wider world.
By the time they leave us, they are ready for what comes next, equipped with the knowledge, skills and character to shape their own future.
