Our Curriculum: An Authentic Learning Journey on The Pathway
At Bexton, our curriculum is more than a timetable of subjects: it is the carefully planned journey every child takes through The Pathway. While we teach the full National Curriculum, we personalise it to ensure that learning is rich, memorable and deeply connected to the five Trails of The Pathway - Performance, Social, Community, Team and Communication.
Every subject, experience and opportunity is designed to promote academic success alongside personal growth and development. We believe that the five Trails represent the heart of a truly holistic education and they guide the way we structure and deliver our curriculum.
Our Curriculum Aims
Authentic learning experiences
-
Every child has the right to experience creativity as an entitlement. Creativity extends beyond the artistic and embraces curiosity, experimentation, connection and play across all subjects.
-
Learning is rooted in authentic contexts: big questions, real-life projects, stories and drama that take knowledge out of the hypothetical and into the real and relevant.
-
We involve our community - parents, local organisations and experts - so children see the relevance of their learning and how it connects to the world around them.
-
Children are encouraged to make a difference, applying what they learn to their local and wider communities.
A love of learning
-
Our curriculum builds empathy and perspective, helping children to see the world through others’ eyes and take action for positive change.
-
Teachers personalise key knowledge and skills in ways that engage, motivate and inspire - always linking to issues pupils care about.
-
Staff are given the time and space to plan collaboratively, ensuring learning experiences are both high-quality and impactful.
-
The curriculum is inclusive, compassionate and diverse, ensuring every child feels represented and supported.
Memorable and enriching moments
-
Our curriculum is ambitious, ensuring children gain both propositional knowledge (what they know) and procedural knowledge (what they can do).
-
Knowledge builds progressively with clear sequences of concepts, chronology and themes.
-
Where possible, subjects are connected through natural links, strengthening and deepening understanding across domains.
-
Pupils with SEND are fully included with teaching tailored to meet their needs and provide authentic, meaningful learning.
Whole-School and Year-Group Experiences
Throughout the year, pupils enjoy whole-school events and curriculum days that bring learning alive and develop the skills at the heart of The Pathway. Examples include:
-
Great Science Share – children design, run and explain their own investigations, practising teamwork, questioning and communication.
-
Mother Tongue Languages Day – celebrating languages and cultures with opportunities for creativity, performance and global awareness.
-
Fairground Attractions DT Day – designing, building and evaluating rides, developing problem-solving, teamwork and leadership.
-
Hello Yellow (Children’s Mental Health Week) – raising awareness through creativity, discussion and advocacy, combining performance and communication with empathy and kindness.
Each year group also plans authentic experiences tied to their topics - from creating museums and enterprise projects to Viking days and outdoor geographical fieldwork. These moments enrich subject knowledge while also embedding the skills of The Pathway: teamwork, resilience, empathy, leadership, creativity and effective communication.
